Am I Gay? Finding Support and Community

Are you questioning your sexual orientation and wondering if you might be gay? It’s completely normal to have questions about your identity, and it’s important to remember that only you can determine who you are.

If you’re looking for support and guidance as you explore your identity, one of the best resources you might consider is reaching out to a PFLAG chapter. PFLAG is an organization that offers support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals, their families, and allies. By connecting with us or your local PFLAG chapter, you can talk to other parents and LGBTQ+ people who have gone through similar experiences and can offer support and advice.

PFLAG can be one of the best resources if you’re thinking about coming out to your parents/family. We can help you learn the best way to share your identity with your family and understand how this impacts you and those you love.

If you’re not ready to attend an in-person meeting or if you’re concerned about being outed, many PFLAG chapters also offer virtual support meetings where you can remain anonymous. This can be a great way to connect with others and find support from the comfort of your own home.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is different, and there is no one “right” way to be gay. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and confident in who you are. If you’re not sure where to start, reaching out to a supportive community like PFLAG can be a great first step.

Below are some additional links to some of our related resource documents:

Remember, you are not alone! There are many people out there who are willing to listen and support you as you explore your identity. Don’t be afraid to reach out and contact us for help – it could make all the difference.

Calling PFLAG Florida Chapters to Action – Equality Florida Lobby Days

No voice is more powerful or persuasive than that of a PFLAG member or supporter. People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+), and their parents, families, friends, and allies, know firsthand the impact of discriminatory laws.

Greater Orlando PFLAG works to support LGBTQ+ kids and help ensure their families are legally protected from discrimination, harassment, and harm in all settings.

Across the country, hundreds of anti-trans bills are under consideration in state legislatures. “Medical bans” criminalize treating a transgender child under the age of 18, imposing penalties on parents and health care providers. Families need to be free to access care that is in their child’s best interest. Last year, we saw Florida legislators pass laws that hurt working families and punish trans kids. On September 27, 2021, Rep. Anthony Sabatini filed legislation  456.0335 Vulnerable Child Protection Act that could prosecute doctors who perform gender-affirming surgeries and hormone reassignment treatment on transgender children.

goPFLAG is joining Equality Florida at their 2022 Lobby Days Program in Tallahassee, FL, where you will have the chance to meet with your lawmakers and make a difference!

We will travel to Tallahassee and meet with lawmakers to hold them accountable and fight for pro-equality legislation! Not only are we advocating for LGBTQ rights, but also for rights and justice for all marginalized communities. With a Trans Youth Medical Care Ban Bill filed, we know we must do everything we can to fight against these attacks.

Lobby Days

Thank you so much for your support and commitment to full Equality in Florida. Don’t hesitate to reach out to for more information.

Fall Fiesta in the Park (Outreach Event)

Greater Orlando PFLAG’s volunteers spent the weekend hosting a tent at Fall Fiesta in the Park, at Lake Eola.  Our tent was located near the same location that we had during Come Out with Pride last month. This was our first time hosting a table at a non-LGBTQ related public event.  We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of interest and appreciation we received from guests. Some people donated before they even knew what PFLAG was all about!

It was a great experience. Some family members shared their stories, some parents encouraged their LGBTQ-curious child to pick the LGBTQ flag they liked. In at least two cases, we think the parent suspected their child is possibly LGBTQ+ and in both cases, they chose the bisexual flag. Many children and adults had lots of questions too. For the first time in a long while, we finally feel we’re connecting to the right folks who need our services.

We look forward to participating in this event in the future Fall and Spring seasons. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity for more volunteers to be involved and share this wonderful experience. Also, many thanks to the following volunteers who made this event happen: Jerry, Debbie, Susan, Barnett, Greg, Sue, Tom, Ann, Lupe. I cannot thank you all enough; you are a wonderful team.

Warmest Regards,
Jerry Collins
